2003 Bam Earthquake, Dey 5. In the early hours of Dey 5, 2003, a powerful earthquake struck the city of Bam and surrounding areas in Kerman province. The earthquake measured 6.6 on the Richter scale and caused severe destruction, including major damage to the historic Bam Citadel. More than 26,000 people lost their lives and tens of thousands were injured or displaced. The Bam earthquake is considered one of the deadliest in Iran’s modern history, with profound effects on the region’s social and cultural fabric. Following the disaster, large-scale relief efforts were launched for emergency aid, temporary shelter, and reconstruction, with both domestic and international organizations participating. This observance was added to the Jalali calendar in 2004 (1383 SH) as a memorial to the Bam earthquake, serving as a symbol of national solidarity and a reminder of the importance of preparedness for natural disasters.
