Dissolution of Rastakhiz Party, Mehr 3. On this date, the Rastakhiz Party, established in 1974 as the sole official political party during the second Pahlavi era, was formally dissolved. The party was created to promote political unity and control party activities in Iran, with membership being mandatory for many government employees. The dissolution of the Rastakhiz Party was a sign of the political changes leading up to the 1979 revolution. During its existence, the party played a significant role in Iran’s domestic politics and, at its peak, counted millions of members. Its structure and policies were designed to encompass all official political activity in the country, effectively dissolving or merging other parties. As social and political dissatisfaction grew in the final years of the Pahlavi government, pressure mounted to end the Rastakhiz Party’s activities. The dissolution on Mehr 3, 1357, is recognized as a marker of the collapse of the previous political order and the beginning of major transformations in Iran.
